1950s home gets an S-Series upgrade
Background to the project
James and Emma Higgins moved into a typical 1950s family home in the suburban area of Solihull, West Midlands and were keen to start reducing their carbon footprint in their 4-bedroom house accommodating the family.
It was clear the pre-installed old boiler needed replacing, however James being an expert in the industry was keen to prove cost-savings could be achieved whilst reducing energy consumption without investing in a new boiler or with any other measures.

Read now!The solution to the project
As well as other cost-effective solutions including suspended floor insulation, LED lighting and draught proofing, James and the family opted for NIBE’s S2125 Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) to deliver heating and hot water. This was installed alongside a VVM S320 to efficiently store the hot water generated by the ASHP. The integrated system took 3 days to install with the aim of producing large carbon savings for the family.
The 1950s home has a total heating space demand of 14,393 kWh per year, alongside a water heating demand of 2,873 kWh per year, and so ambitious solutions were needed in order to fulfil the family’s needs.
The air source heat pump was an attractive option for the family due to its ease of installation, without the requirement to change out radiators and controls. The S2125 heat pump is also quiet but powerful, with a working range of up to 75°C in outdoor conditions down to -25°C.
The Results
James and the family believe that the experience has been overwhelmingly positive, adding that it was “great to tell the kids you’re doing something positive for the environment”, incentivising the family to investigate other possible cost-saving solutions including electric vehicles and solar power.
James is confident that visible savings will start to be seen in the future, with gas prices already climbing comparably quicker than electricity in the home. Savings are also expected by removing James’ gas bills, with NIBE heat pumps being powered by electricity, moving the family away from costly gas to heat their home.
Testimonial
We’ve really been pleased with my NIBE Air Source Heat Pump. As we approach our third winter it is great to know that the heat pump will be there keeping us warm and providing plenty of hot water. It also means a lot to us as a family to be able to contribute in a small way to the heating revolution that we need in order to meet our climate change goals.
About the installer
James’ heat pump was installed by Gareth Wilson from Wilson Plumbing & Heating, specialising in renewables including NIBE’s heat pumps and solar energy, as well as underfloor heating.
