NIBE offers three types of controller for your heat pump:
The SMO 20 is our entry level, wired controller and is compatible with the myUplink app.
The SMO S40 is our premium touchscreen controller and is compatible with the myUplink app, our Smart Home Accessories and has wireless connectivity.
The VVM S320 is a 180L hot water cylinder with an integrated S-Series controller. The controller offers the same functionality as the SMO S40.
Do you always need a controller for a NIBE heat pump?
The short answer is yes, you always need a way of controlling your heat pump or you have no way to alter its settings. The type of controller that you need however is dependent on the type of heat pump that you have.
For Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps sit outside the house and have no controller built into the unit, they therefore require a separate controller. This can come in two forms:
An SMO 20 or SMO S40 controller that sits inside the house.
A VVM S320 (the tall unit below) hot water cylinder with built in controller that sits inside the house.
For Ground Source or Exhaust Air Heat Pumps
Exhaust air and ground source units operate slightly differently to air source. As they have no outdoor unit, the controller is integrated into the heat pump that sits inside.
Exhaust air and ground source heat pumps can still be combined with other NIBE controllers to provide further connectivity, such as the SMO 20 and SMO S40.
