Dan-Wood House, the designer and manufacturer of a range of energy-efficient, timber frame modular homes, is building at ‘Graven Hill’ - the UK’s largest self-build scheme - based in Bicester, Oxfordshire. Up to 1,900 beautiful and contemporary homes will be created at this unique development by Dan-Wood and a number of housebuilders over a 10-year period. The new homes will be surrounded by open, green spaces including woodland, allotments and a network of cycle and footpaths.
Dan-Wood House was keen to showcase the benefits of heat pumps in its showhouse for providing heating and hot water for homes. The showhouse at Graven Hill features three large bedrooms and has a timber frame construction and an attractive render finish, plus solar PV panels on its roof. All Dan-Wood rendered houses utilise 30cm thick insulation, which effectively 'wraps' the house and protects it against both cold weather in winter and overheating in summer.
The Solution
NIBE F2040 12kw heat pumps were specified for the showhouse and several other custom-built properties on the site. The F2040 is a compact air source heat pump, which provides optimum savings as it automatically adapts to a home’s heating requirements throughout the year. The heat pump works down to an outdoor temperature of –20°C. It is renowned for its discrete appearance and very low noise levels.
The NIBE F2040 is available with NIBE Uplink, a Smart Home system that allows a homeowner to control the heating remotely via an app on their smart phone or tablet and monitor its performance.
Heating and hot water are provided by the heat pump, with the hot water supplemented at the showhouse by the solar PV system.

Results
The expected energy savings for the showhouse are 21,189 kWh per annum and the CO2 savings are predicted to be around 2,250 kg per year.
