Heat Pump chosen as sustainable solution for four bed Wiltshire property
Background to the project
When Gary Pass bought his 100 year old detached Edwardian house in 2019, there was no existing central heating and his family endured a cold and drafty winter.
With the clock ticking, Gary needed to find a solution before the next winter came around. He was looking for a futureproof, environmentally friendly system that would last for the long term, and after some research decided to invest in a heat pump as an eco alternative to an LPG boiler.
Gary’s four bedroom home is set in an acre and a half of land. Its space and rural location made a ground source heat pump the most viable option. After some research, Gary chose the NIBE F1155 Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP).

The solution to the project
West Sussex-based NIBE Pro installer, Nicholls Boreholes, was engaged to install the brand new 12 kW heat pump. Nicholls Boreholes placed the unit in the property’s paddock, about 30-40m from the plant room where the heat pump is housed. Throughout the project, around 750m of pipework was necessary.
NIBE F1155 is an intelligent, inverter-controlled ground source heat pump with a separate hot water tank, which can be sized based on the requirements of each individual project. NIBE F1155 automatically adapts to Gary’s family’s heating demand through each season, minimising operating costs and keeping emissions to a minimum.
The installation took place July 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown, which made it necessary to take extra precautions. Gary and the team decided to put the heat pump and water cylinder in an adjacent outbuilding, which could be specifically used as a plant room. This had the added bonus of the installation team not needing access to the house.
As someone who is “technology mad”, NIBE’s smart system appealed to Gary. The system allows for full control over energy consumption, automatically adjusting the indoor climate for maximum comfort, while doing nature a favour at the same time.
Along with the heat pump installation, the property has also been improved with other eco renovations including solar photovoltaic panels, a battery storage, and upgraded insulation. The family has also traded in their old cars for electric vehicles.
It was a successful experiment for Gary, and with the heat pump now due for its fourth service, Gary says it has been “completely faultless so far.”
